Listening and Learning from the Land: Birds, Trees & Plant Medicines
Nature Vancouver
Sun, May 10 9 AM – 11 AM Jericho Beach, Vancouver
Program
Join us for a special walk during Vancouver Bird Celebration Week that invites us to slow down, pay attention, and deepen our relationship with the living landscape. Together we will wander through meadow, forest edge, and shoreline, listening for birdsong overhead, noticing the textures of bark and leaves, and learning about the plants that quietly sustain life all around us. This collaborative walk brings together three perspectives on the land. LoriAnn Bird, an Indigenous Métis herbalist and educator, will share knowledge about wild, medicinal, and edible plants. Ryan Regier will introduce some of the trees that shape the local ecosystem and provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. Joanna Chin will guide participants in observing and listening for birds, sharing tips on how to notice bird behaviour and sound. LoriAnn is a descendant of the T’suu tina, Dene, Cree, Nipissing, and Anishinaabe Peoples, with mixed French, Swedish and Celtic ancestry. Drawing on her deep knowledge of traditional plant medicines and relationships with the Land, she will introduce participants to plants that have long supported both people and wildlife. Together we will explore how birds, trees, and plants are woven together in a living web of relationships. Participants will be encouraged to slow down, observe closely, and listen — not only to birds, but also to the stories the Land can tell. Come ready to walk slowly, look closely, and listen deeply. LoriAnn will also have copies of her book Revered Roots available for purchase for $30, and she will be happy to sign copies for those interested.
